Labiaplasty Minora

The labiaplasty minora is a plastic surgery procedure that is capable of reducing and/or reshaping the physical characteristics of a patient’s labia minora, for cosmetic or medical reasons.

What Is Labiaplasty Minora?

The labiaplasty minora is a plastic surgery procedure that is capable of reducing and/or reshaping the physical characteristics of a patient’s labia minora, for cosmetic or medical reasons (and at times, both). Basically, the labia minora can be surgically reduced in size and made more symmetrical, ultimately working towards creating labia minora that is to the patient’s liking. One of the principal goals of labiaplasty minora is to excise excess labia minora tissue that extends past the labia minora, the “outer lips” of the vagina.

Labiaplasty Minora

Labiaplasty has been experiencing a steady increase in popularity during the past several years. Thanks to a growing overall acceptance of plastic surgery, women are feeling more and more comfortable seeking and undergoing the procedures needed to aesthetically alter their appearances. But this is not to say that labiaplasty does not have its medical warrants- women who have labia that are large or irregularly-shaped enough to cause discomfort may medically, not cosmetically, need a labiaplasty.

There are actually two types plastic surgery that deal with the physical alteration: labiaplasty majora and labiaplasty minora. Although labiaplasty majora, which deals with cosmetic and medical issues in regards to the physical characteristics of the labia majora, has been gaining popularity as of late, it is the labiaplasty minora that has been experiencing a vastly greater increase in demand by cosmetogynecology procedure patients.

Who is a good candidate for Labiaplasty Minora?

If you feel self-conscious about your labia minora or have labia minora that are causing you discomfort or pain, and are in good health, then you are likely a good candidate for labiaplasty minora. Although having labia minora that is larger or more irregularly-shaped than the average woman is quite natural, if your labia minora is preventing you from living life in the fullest in one way or another, the labiaplasty minora procedure will likely be able to help, but determining whether or not labiaplasty minora is right for you can only be done after a thorough discussion with your plastic surgeon.

Labiaplasty minora is not recommended for women who are:

  • Pregnant
  • Currently menstruating (in order to reduce the risk of surgical infections)
  • Have had complications from an episiotomy
  • Currently experiencing a herpes outbreak or have an active yeast infection
  • Have a prolapsed uterus

What to expect during a Labiplasty Minora procedure?

Depending on the type of outcome that the patient desires, there are two types of labiaplasty minora that can potentially be used: the “trim” method and the “wedge” method.

The “trim” method is essentially the surgical excision of the parts of the labia minora that protrudes past the labia majora or the parts of the labia minora that is asymmetrical or is irregularly-shaped with a straight, longitudinally-oriented cut. This method results in a new, raw edge for the labia minora that needs to be surgically sewed over.

Sewing the edge shut typically results in a labial edge that does not look as it does before: the scarring will result in a labial edge that is lighter in pigment along with a labial ridge that is smoother but may be scarred. The trim method of labiaplasty minora tends to result in a long scar that usually runs the length of the labia minora, which may be unfavorable to patients. For some women, the lighter pigmented labial edge produced by the trim method is highly ideal. However, if a woman would like to preserve her labial edge and reduce the amount of visible scarring, the wedge method may be more ideal.

The “wedge” method involves the surgical excision of a “V”-shaped wedge from the labia minora. In more detail, the cosmetic surgeon will remove the parts of the labia minora that protrude past the labia majora or causes any irregular shapes, but remove them in such a way that a concave “V”-shape results on the labia majora when the parts have been removed. The surgeon will then surgically stitch together the edges of the V to bring about the newly reduced labia minora.

By surgically amputating a “V”-shaped wedge and stitching the edges together, the natural edge of the labia minora is preserved and the resulting scar is short and only runs in a latitudinal manner, unlike the scar from the trim method which runs from top to bottom.

Whether the trim method or wedge method is used- and which techniques will be used within each procedure- can only be determined by a thorough discussion with your plastic surgeon about the results that you desire from a labiaplasty minora procedure, since each individual’s anatomy and expectations from the labiaplasty minora will be different.

Whether the trim method or the wedge method is used, most labiaplasty minora procedures will take about 1-2 hours to complete. The procedure can be performed using just local anesthesia and a mild sedative, but general anesthesia can be used as necessary.

What to expect during Labiaplasty Minora recovery?

Almost all labiaplasty minora procedures are performed on an out-patient basis, meaning patients can return home the same day as their procedures. Although patients can expect to experience some swelling and discomfort, both should mostly subside within 5 days. The cosmetic surgeon will prescribe antibiotics- in order to prevent the development of post-op infections- and painkillers as necessary.

It is advised that patients refrain from showering for the first 24 hours and then showering and/or cleaning the labia minora and the surrounding region several times per day thereafter. Antibiotic ointment should be applied for at least a week, or for as long as directed by your cosmetic surgeon. Within a couple weeks of the procedure, the majority of the swelling should subside and the stitches should be absorbed.

Recovery from labiaplasty minora procedures are known to be fairly speedy and without complications, with most patients feeling well enough to return to work and their regular routines within a week of the procedure, with some patients feeling well enough to return to work in as little as three days.

Patients may resume exercising after two weeks, but heavy and strenuous exercising should be held off for at least four weeks. It is recommended that patients refrain from having sexual intercourse for at least 4-6 weeks following their procedures, taking care to use plenty of lubrication when they do so.

A few weeks ago I saw Dr. Samuel for these terrible spider veins I had on my legs. He advised me that there are laser treatments that he performs that would "zap" my spider veins away! I had the laser vein removal performed three times, and my legs look awesome! I do not have spider veins anymore! I can't wait for summer to come to show off my new legs!

I was embarrassed at first at the thought of receiving anything from a cosmetic surgery center as a man, but when I finished six laser hair removal treatments I was happy I did. I actually started noticing a difference after two treatments. My skin feels great and there's no sign of unwanted hair. Plus, he has some fine girls working for him.
